What do we do in the library?
During library classes, we read! We also learn about many different library topics, such as library organization, genres, how to choose a “just right” book, the research process, and how to access and retrieve information from various resources (nonfiction and reference books, online databases, websites, etc.). We also learn about different technology tools and work on library and classroom projects.
How do I find books and things?
The greatest resource for locating books and things in the library is the library staff. Please feel free to ask questions! Helping you find information is the main part of our job. We can help you use the catalog and other databases available to you in the learning center.
How do I borrow library books?
The Circulation Desk is right next to the main entrance of the library. You can't miss it! Ms. Wasmund or Ms. Lane will be able to help you check out books and other library materials.
What are my responsibilities when I check out library materials?
You agree to take care of library materials so that they will be in good shape for the next user. We understand that things happen and are always willing to work with you in case materials are late or are in some way damaged. Treat them as if you bought them yourself!
How many books can I check out?
Kindergarten and First Grade: One at a time
Grades 2/3 and 4/5: Two at a time
How long can I keep my book? Books are checked out for a one week period, though we do encourage patrons to return books as soon as they are finished. The sooner books come back, the sooner you can check out new books!
Where do I return materials?
At the Circulation Desk.
What happens if I lose a book?
We understand that sometimes, despite best intentions, books are lost or damaged. We also understand that the cost of replacing lost books may be more than is affordable for some families. In order to encourage all students to show responsibility for lost books, we have created a slide scale for book replacement. Please pay what you can afford to help our library replace your child’s lost book. Please feel free to contact Ms. Lane or Ms. Wasmund to discuss options. Download the Lost Book Form.
What if a book is not on the shelf or the library doesn't own it?
We are lucky to work with other school libraries in the Burlington School District. Through interlibrary loan we share our resources, lending and borrowing books to meet our school needs! If a book is unavailable at another school library, we work with Fletcher Free Library. Any resident of Burlington can use the Fletcher Free Library free of charge.
Can I check the library catalog from home?
Yes! You will need internet access. Click here to open the catalog. You can also access the catalog from the Sustainability Academy home page: click the Library link on the left toolbar and select Library Catalog.
Can I check out magazines?
Yes, all but the newest issue. New issues are in a plastic cover. We like to give everyone a chance to read them before they start circulating. The current magazine subscriptions we have for students are American Girl, Sports Illustrated, and Ranger Rick Jr.
When do the students visit the library?
Each class visits the library twice a week; once for library class, and again for Tech Time in the computer lab.
Can parents/guardians borrow books?
Yes, please do! Stop by anytime and we'll get you set up with an account of your very own.
Are there opportunities to volunteer in the library?
Yes! Please contact Ms. Lane or Ms. Wasmund for more information.
